For 14 years, pastoral ministry was my calling. Serving small congregations as a minister gave me numerous opportunities to provide pastoral counseling to those in need. While obtaining my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Drake University, I honed my skills as a therapist by providing psychotherapy for a wide range of presenting issues to individuals, couples and groups in a variety of settings.
Including but not limited to: Anxiety Disorders, Blended Families, Depression, Divorce, Eating Disorders/Body Issues, Grief and Loss, LGBTQ Issues, Personal Growth, Phase of Life Concerns, Public/Motivational Speaking for Corporations and Small Groups Regarding Mental Health Topics, Relationship Stressors, Sexuality/Gender Identity Issues, Spirituality Issues, Women’s Issues
My approach is simple and straight-forward. The foundation of my clinical work is person-centered which aims to establish and build a positive therapeutic relationship between you, the client, and me, the counselor. Taking the time to get to know one another and understand your therapeutic goals is imperative. You get to make the decision on whether or not it’s a good fit. If it is, we move forward together.
Once the foundation is laid, a pillar of my clinical work is Positive Psychology. Tapping into your positive personal experiences and your positive personal traits will guide our work.
Another pillar in my approach is Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). CBT focuses on solutions by helping you determine distorted thoughts that lead to maladaptive behaviors. Replacing distorted thoughts with evidence-based thoughts enables you to make the behavior modifications you desire.
The third pillar for me as a therapist is working from a holistic perspective, incorporating the mind, body and spirit into our collaborative work. If utilizing your faith in therapy is important to you, it’s important to me.
Joining you on your journey would be my privilege and pleasure. One of my God-given gifts is to be an encourager. I’d be honored to share that gift with you!
